Stillwater Oklahoma is a cozy college town with a huge football stadium. But, there’s a lot more to do than just cheer on the OSU Cowboys. After living there for five years, these are some of my favorite things to do in small town Stillwater.
For food, I prefer vegetables over meat, I like to eat at House of Greek a great gyro joint with salads and other Mediterranean dishes, Thai Cafe, a restaurant with great Thai tea, Main Street Noodle, a Japanese noodle restaurant with Korean, Indian and Chinese fusions, the famous Hideaway Pizza with great crispy pizza crust, and Old School Bagel Cafe a locally owned restaurant that makes their bagels from scratch daily. For coffee lovers Aspen coffee has the three locations with the best coffee in town.
Stillwater has a lot of parks to go for walks, playing frisbee, fishing or going for a run. Couch Park has a small baseball field, a frisbee golf course and walking trails. Lake Sanborn has a lovely park and walking trails that curl around a small lake. Lake McMurtry is a bit north of town but is the largest park in town with a nice sized lake where you can fish or go for an 6.2 mile run.
The OSU Botanic Gardens has a few trails and open park areas for relaxing along with a public vegetable garden, Japanese Zen garden and other themed gardens. Admission is free. Next to the Botanic Gardens is the OSU Insect Zoo, a zoo with many exotic species of walking sticks, praying mantis, tarantulas, scorpions, beetles, cockroaches, bees, millipedes, centipedes, spiders and more. Admission is $1. You can also visit the Washington Irving Museum, a museum run and owned by a quirky old history buff and master collector. Admission is free. Get artsy at the Oklahoma State University Museum of Art or the Postal Plaza Art Gallery. Take a tour of the OSU campus and take a nap on library lawn or by Theta pond. If you like old books you can buy a used copy of a classic for $2 at the Gypsy Snark.
When you’re ready to go out on the town grab a $2.50 daily drink special at Stonewall, named after the LGBT Stonewall Riots, the local we-accept-all-weirdos bar. Thursday nights is “beatdown” a night for dancing to a local dj in the biergarten. College bar, located on historic bar street is another good choice or Finnegan’s pubin downtown. If you are looking for a live performance look at the Tumbleweed and OSU Seretean Center’s calendar of events.
Even in small town Stillwater good times are to be had, enjoy!
