6 Fun Things to Do in Shenzhen

Although not as common a tourist destination in China as Beijing or Shanghai, Shenzhen can hold its own. Shenzhen is China’s fifth biggest city with a population of around 10 million. Shenzhen is easily accessible through either its local airport or by way of Hong Kong. Shenzhen is located only an hour outside of Hong Kong. From the list below you’ll see that Shenzhen has plenty to offer.

See All of the Wonders of the World at the Window of the World

Your visit to Shenzhen wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Window of the World, Shenzhen’s most unique theme park. Why bother traveling the world when you can see the Eiffel Tower, Niagara Falls, Notre-Dame, Sydney Opera House, and dozens of other famous sites all in one place? Well you probably still want to travel the world, but you don’t want to miss Shenzhen’s kitsch replicas of numerous world attractions. Getting to Window of the World is easy as it has its own subway stop off of Line 1.

Go for a Hike

If you want a break from the urban hustle and bustle check out Wutong Mountain, the tallest mountain in Shenzhen. Although Shenzhen has multiple mountains to choose from, Wutong is the closest to the downtown area. It’s a long and steep climb to the top, but the views from the 944 m peak are worth it. The mountain tends to be popular during the weekend, so try and go during the week when it’s less crowded. You can reach the mountain by car (there’s parking) or take the No. 211 bus from downtown Luo Hu to the last stop.

Eat Street Food

While Shenzhen has plenty of fine dining restaurants, you’ll find delicious and cheap food right on the street. Tofu often gets a bad rap in the U.S.A. and other similar places, but only because it’s not prepared properly. Try tofu skins and you could be pleasantly surprised. If you’re feeling even more adventurous then try roasted pigeon or chicken feet.

Shop and Party in COCO Park

COCO Park, located in the center of the city, is one of the cities biggest malls. When you get tired of shopping, eat at one of the many restaurants the area has to offer, and then grab drinks from any of the popular bars or clubs there.

Get a Personalized Painting from the Dafen Oil Painting Village

Dafen once used to produce 60% of the world’s reproduction oil paintings. Although it produces less now, Dafen is still a sight to behold. Once you peruse through dozens of artists’ stalls and find one you like, he or she can make an oil painting of your favorite picture (or two or three) for an affordable price. Even if you aren’t interested in purchasing artwork it can be fun to examine the impressive replicas. Dafen is a 5-minute walk from the Dafen subway stop.

Relax in Lizhi Gongyuan (Lychee Park)

Shenzhen is mostly a concrete jungle. However, Lychee Park offers a nice reprieve with plenty of greenery and a lake. Lychee Park has been compared to New York’s Central Park and for good reason. Walking around or simply relaxing with a book is the perfect way to spend an afternoon.
